Inhabits shallow nearshore, tideland, swamp and reed field. General habit similar to that of yellow-billed spoonbill but more vigilant. Breeds in late July. Egg white with scattered light purple and brown spots. Four to six eggs laid. |

Winter feathers of male ash-colored from forehead to rump; scapulars and back slightly brown; upper tail coverts white; ear tufts and sides of neck ash-colored; chin and throat light ash-colored; upper breast light ash-colored; lower breast, belly and lower tail coverts white; beak cement-colored; legs tawny buff. |
